Status codes and responses

Start here

Every response starts with a three-digit status code. Before an app reads anything else, it reads the code.

The first digit tells you the family:

  • 2xx: it worked
  • 3xx: go somewhere else
  • 4xx: something's wrong with the request
  • 5xx: something went wrong on the server

Choosing the right code is one of a back-end developer's everyday jobs.
